General notes
The image of Officers, N.C.O.s, and men of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. appeared in the Burnley Express of 20.1.1940 p. 9, entitled "Soldiers of Yesterday", initially a copy of the photo was loaned to the paper by Mr. B.A. Cliff, who as Sergeant Cliff is second from the right standing, but an anonymous reader, who described himself as "one of the old volunteers", donated a copy to the newspaper. He identifies commanding officer Colonel Mitchell, seated in the centre, front row, on his right Lieut. Birkett, who he describes as "Burnley's premier bandleader to date. A fine musician. Efficiency and no favours was his motto. On the other side of Colonel Mitchell, standing, was our then Sergeant-Major Adams, the typical soldier, just as ready to give you a bit of encouragement as he was to bark at you." The photo is dated to around 1903, and was taken outside Bank Hall.
