General notes
MV Balmoral was built by Thornycroft at Woolston for Red Funnel, launched 27th June 1949. She served as a ferry between and Southampton and Cowes and also, in the Summer months, as a pleasure steamer around the Isle of Wight. She was withdrawn from service in 1968 because the demand for car ferry traffice had increased at the expense of foot passenger traffic. Refitted into 1986, she entered service again, this time as a heritage steamer operating out of the Bristol Channel. In 1989 she ran a Round Britain timetable calling at some 60 different ports.
