John Ackworth/Rev. Fredrick Robert Smith, author and Methodist minister., born Snaith Yorkshire, 18.4.1854, from a family of Methodist ministers, came to Burnley in 1909 to become Superintendent of the Wesleyan Circuit, he retired in 1913 due to ill health and died in Victoria Hospital 13.11.1917. He also wrote tales of Methodist Lancashire life using dialect under the name John Ackworth. His first collection "Clog Shop Chronicles" published in 1896 was extremely successful and he published many more works of fiction and also sermons. He was a good preacher, although he was so short he could hardly be seen over the pulpit edge, always good humoured, with red hair. He left a widow, four sons and three daughters who eventually all left the area. His daughter Nora was also a published author.
