7.11.1860 - 4.3.1937. Minister at Brunswick Methodist Chapel1895- 1898. He was a hugely popular preacher attracting large congregations. He published "All Men are Liars" in 1895 whilst at Brunswick, his brother Silas was already an established author and had been at Brunwick from 1876-1880. Hocking travelled extensively and wrote some 100 books. His work was extremely popular at the time. From a family of Cornish Methodist novelists, his sister Salome Hocking, and three of his four daughters Anne Hocking, Elizabeth Nisot, Joan Shill all wrote fiction.

Brunswick Independent Methodist Chapel, founded in 1834, was a huge chapel, built in 1867 on Manchester Road, Burnley, opposite the Town Hall, closed and demolished 1962.
