These cottages and shops were located on Back Lane and were probably constructed in at least c1800 to serve the workers in the nearby coal pits. In the distance one can make out Cherryfold farm, which dates back to the early 17th century. This scene changed dramatically in 1926 when Back Lane was widened as part of the creation of an arterial road network. It was also renamed Rossendale Road.
