On a sunny June day in 1953, crowds gathered in the town centre to see the 'Freedom of the Borough' bestowed on the East Lancashire Regiment.
In his speech the Mayor said that "We were honoured when the Regiment, without hesitation, decided to accept the Freedom of the Borough, because it is a regiment which, by its deeds and traditions, has reflected the patriotism and loyalty of our town." After accepting the honour outside the town hall, the regiment then marched down St. James's Street, pictured here.
