The site was formerly occupied by premises owned by Messrs. Baily Brothers and was purchased some three or four years ago by the Corporation for £1,600. It was thought at the time that it would be a very good place for a new Town Hall, should it be resolved to build one. But the ratepayers objected to such expenditure and after a time the alternative presented itself of an application to Mr. Carnegie, for a gift of money to enable the Corporation to build a new Free Library.
