A copy of this image is held at Fleetwood Library with 'Frank Rothwell' and 'Fleetwood' embossed on the frame. The photographer Frank Rothwell is recorded as working in Fleetwood in 1895.

"In 1275 King Henry III granted market rights to the manor of Rossall which included the future site of Fleetwood but it was not until 1840 that the then Lord of the Manor, Sir Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood, actually opened the market.

It was situated on its present site, a piece of land two thousand square yards in the area between Adelaide Street and Victoria Street. The original building was a primitive wooden structure with a slated roof surrounded by sandstone walls with gates opening onto the adjoining streets.

By 1842 the responsibility for the market appears to have been divided between the Lord of the Manor and the town's Improvement Commissioners and by 1868 cattle and livestock were being sold. In 1875 the market was sold to the Fleetwood Estate Company who let the tenancy on a yearly basis. The local Authority, the Fleetwood Local Government Board, bought the rights in 1890, adding an open market and rebuilding the main hall two years later."
