"The bungalow..........was built for Manchester solicitor Mr H T Crofton in 1894. It stood on a sand dune (now corner of Promenade Road and Cartmell Road) on the Fairhaven Estate. The estate railway passed in front , and behind it was a pond known to local schoolboys as 'Froggy Pond'. Later acquired by Mr A Rogerson and then Lord Ashton, it was demolished c.1960"

Lord Ashton (James Williamson) (born 1842) was a businessman and philanthropist from Lancaster who made his money in the lino industry. He donated money to allow the town of St Annes on Sea to purchased St George's Gardens which subsequently became Ashton Gardens.
