The pebbles (or stanners) in the foreground were often used in the building trade, particularly for the cobbled walls that are a feature of the Lytham St Annes area. This area is now the location of the sea wall around Fairhaven Lake and is marked on the 1893 25" to 1 Mile OS map (Sheet 69-1) as "Double Stanner".

In the distance on the left there is evidence of a steam engine working in the dunes. This is presumably work being carried out by the developer Thomas Riley after he leased 264 acres from the Fairhaven estate in 1892 (see image no 22519).
