Viking arm rings from the Silverdale Hoard. These beautiful silver pieces have designs punched onto them in carefully arranged patterns. They date from around 900AD. At the top of the photograph three spectacular arm rings have been carefully fitted inside each other. We do not know why. Perhaps it was to take up less space or to keep them together as special treasures. In front of these are four arm rings looped together with one very thick finger ring. LANMS.2013.32.4-5 and 8a-d This spectacular collection of Viking silver was discovered in mid September 2011. It is one of the largest collection of Viking silver found to date and was unearthed by a keen metal detectorist near to the village of Silverdale in North Lancashire. The hoard is believed to have been deposited at approximately the same time as the Cuerdale Hoard, circa 905 AD. The Silverdale Hoard was purchased by Lancashire County Council and displayed at Lancaster City Museum, the Museum of Lancashire and the British Museum. Since then it has undergone careful conservation. These images were taken at Lancaster and Preston in 2013-14 before the conservation work took place.
