Dr Shepherd Collection - Dr Johnson's Dictionary, 1755.
Preston
The author and lexicographer Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), was a contemporary of Dr Shepherd so it was natural that his famous 'Dictionary of the English Language' would be in Shepherd's collections. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography tells us that ....... "The Dictionary left an immense mark on its age. It soon became recognized as a work of classical standing, and in spite of some minor blemishes it has never lost its historical importance as the first great endeavour of its kind."

Richard Shepherd, physician and former Mayor of Preston, bequeathed his library to the people of Preston after his death in 1761. The collection was added to in subsequent years and is now housed in the Harris Library. It includes works on literature, theology, law, science and medicine, and numerous publications of learned societies. To mark the 250th anniversary of his death in 2011 Lancashire County Council Cultural Services and the Harris Museum have produced a display of the works in this extensive and fascinating collection. This is one of the titles that was used.
