Boundary riding is an ancient custom of riding around the boundaries of a parish, essentially marking its extent and addressing, with riders from adjacent parishes, any disputes over where the boundaries lay. This was particularly important as the parish was financially responsible for the welfare of its poor inhabitants. The practice died out when more accurate maps became available, but was revived as an old custom in the Victorian era.
