Nelson
Taken outside Saw Mill of W. Lamberts, who built the kite to raise money for the war effort.
The inscription read 'This kite was flown over Nelson Centre in 1893 on 700 yards of rope'.
In fact it dragged the four men holding it down Parrock Hill, and the last two to let go ended up in the river.
Lamberts made cricket bats, which were exported the world over.
The image is likely to have been taken by Bancroft and Crabtree Photographers, whose shop can be seen on the right of the image.
