The tower of the church dates from Norman times. It is generally accepted they the foundations date from the twelfth century, for in the reign of Henry 1 the monks of Kirkby Priory some interest in "Church at Slaydeburn". Most of the church is from the fifteenth century and has several special features, notably a three-decker pulpit with canopy, a Jacobean chancel screen and much seventeenth century woodwork.
