The Roman Catholic church of St Peter in Lancaster was opened in 1859, replacing a chapel in Dalton Square now used as offices by Lancaster City Council. It was designed by E. G. Paley, and was elevated to cathedral status in 1925.
In 1909, the church was reordered, the altar piece seen here being sent to a church in Liverpool, being replaced by an altar and tryptich by Gilbert Scott. The church was restored in 1995.
