General notes
This is a photograph of the Musson family, then of Mayfield House, Clitheroe. The individuals are actually named at the bottom of the photo. Seated centrally is 'Father' Doctor William Musson, general practitioner in Clitheroe. 'Mother', Mrs. Susannah Elizabeth Musson is seated third from the left. Their son Doctor Alfred Musson, who took over the practice, second from the left. Annie Musson (standing fourth from the left). was an army nurse in India, married a Doctor Melville and died from enteric fever in India in 1899. Several of the children had distinguished careers: Matilda (Tilly), standing to right of her father, worked as a educationalist for Sussex County Council, specialising in technical education for girls. Nellie (Ellen), sitting to the right of her father, trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and went on to become President of the Nurses Council, CBD, DBE etc. There is a full account of her career in the Oxford Dictionary of National biography. Dixon (seated right) worked for the Yorkshire and Lancashire Railway. Much of the information regarding this family comes from Diaries of James Garnett of Waddow Hall 1858-1900. William Musson was their family doctor from 1856 when they moved to the Hall and the families were close friends.
