The original three storey mill dates from 1854 when William Hargreaves and Messrs Horsfield and Brown were tenants of the mill, they were known as Wheatley Lane Manufacturing Company, making cotton goods. In 1893 Proctor Brothers bought the mill and built offices and a new engine house The Proctor Brothers continued to run the mill until 1934.
