General notes
An old Accrington homestead, which was the residence of the Riley family, from whom Edward Croston purchased it, in the 17th Century. Edward Croston married Elizabeth Chetham, niece of the Manchester benefactor, Humphrey Chetham. Edward Croston was the legal advisor, in respect to the founding of the Chetham Hospital and Library in Manchester. The Hillock was later a possession of the Walmsleys of Dunkenhalgh, and was leased to the Dennison family in 1765 by the Peels, and is now included in Peel Park.
