General notes

This cottage at the junction of Wigan Road and Church Road was the original 'Fox and Goose' Inn. It was demolished in 1967 at which time it had been standing for 140 years. In 1825 it was one of 3 hostelries and was occupied by Betty Ashcroft.
In 1872 the Innkeeper was Hugh Edden and soon after this date the licensed premises were moved further down Wigan Road where the new Fox and Goose Inn had been built. It was on the south side of the Glenburn roundabout, across from Brock's Firework factory.
The former Inn, owned by the Earl of Lathom, became known as 'White Gates Cottage' after the crossing gates of the mineral railway which crossed Wigan Road nearby. A subsequent tenant, Mrs. Fanny Holland, kept it as a sweets and tobacconists. In 1890 the tenancy was taken by Mr. and Mrs. Hesketh who continued the business unti their death. Their daughter and son-in-law remained in residence until 1928.
From 1928 to 1967 the cottage was in the name of Mr. Charles Bailey.
