General notes
The photograph was taken outside the Old Links Golf Course Clubhouse, Highbury Road West, St Annes.
We believe that this image is of men working on the development of new sewers and pumping station on the sandhills opposite Highbury Road West around 1929. The postcard was lent by Mrs J Tomlinson of Lytham St Annes to St Annes Library where it was scanned in October 2010. Jack Howson (middle row without a cap) was her husband's uncle. He worked for the London Midland and Scottish Railway Company in the 1920s and the Barrow shipyards during World War II.
User feedback: 'I am fairly sure, having compared this picture with ones I have, that the man on the left of the middle row is named Holliman; my late wife's great grandfather. He was foreman of works at sometime on the sewage works having moved to Blackpool after WW1. He was part of the tunneling teams in the war undermining the German tunnels. pre WW1 he was building reservoirs, one near Masham we know of. He was also called to give evidence at the Houses of Parliament on excavation safety (circa 1911) as he had a good record on his sites.' 30/04/2024.
