General notes
John Williams (1897-1964) was born in Nelson and was the managing director of Walter Pollard Ltd. He was an innovator and the first manager to provide workers with 3 sets of overalls made by North Valley Services, Colne, which were washed and changed each week and to have a trained nurse on the staff.

He held four weekend works conferences 1947-1848 in Grange-Over-Sands and all worker's were encouraged to go to them at the firm's expense, given lectures and encourage to take part in the discussions.
He also introduced 'de-tensing' a method of relaxation to his employees.
