The Countrywide Holiday Association (originally the Co-operative Holiday Association) has its origins in Colne, where Rev. T.A. Leonard led his first walking holiday in 1891. The association was formed to provide "rational" holidays for working people as an alternative to commercial seaside trips, focusing on simple, inexpensive, and improving outdoor experiences with planned walks and social activities. The CHA later changed its name to Countrywide Holidays Association and its history is linked to the formation of the Holiday Fellowship by Leonard in 1913, after he felt the CHA had become too middle-class.
