Horizontal Cross Compound Condensing Engine. The No. 2 shed, completed in a great expansion period illustrates the changes that had taken place in engine design over some 40 years. It was still a sound basic design, plain, solid and reasonably economical which could be relied upon to keep running regularly with little attention. The open flywheel arms although losing power, were a saving in cost and left the flywheel structure readily visible. The high pressure cylinder in the left foreground shows the unusual Roberts feature of the high pressure slide valves being on the outer side of the cylinder (they were usually placed between the cylinders) and too, the Roberts cross grid cut off valves. The No. 2 shed was replaced by the increased capacity of No. 1, when it was re-equipped with automatic looms (early 1960's).
