General notes
The earliest mention of Royle was towards the end of the 13th century, when the district was referred to as Rohille. Other ancient documents give the name as Roel, Roole, Rolle and Rowle. The hall was built in the 16th century and was the home of the Townleys of Royle. From 1901 to 1905 the hall was unoccupied, later the majority of the building was demolished.
