Two weeks after The Titanic had sunk, Wallace's body was recovered by the search ship "Mackay-Bennett" and returned to England. The funeral took place on May 18, 1912, when c. 30,000 people were present at the route of the funeral procession and was attended by Mr Black, the musical director of the White Star Company, members of Colne Town Council and the Mayor of Colne. The procession started at Bethel Church and was headed by several bands. The choir sang at the graveside 'Nearer my God to Thee.' and he was buried in Colne Cemetery. In 1913, a memorial, which included a bust of the man, was unveiled in front of the Carnegie Colne library and was inscribed: "Bandmaster of the RMS "Titanic" who perished in the foundering of that vessel on April 15, 1912. Erected by voluntary contributions to commemorate the heroism of a native of this town." It was reported at the time that Sir W.P. Hartley promised to contribute a sum equal to 10% of the total amount subscribed towards the memorial to Wallace.
