At one period, more than forty years ago the Mechanics' Institution Library was housed in the small room facing St James's Street, now attached to The Swan (now Eastwood's Office. Ed), which was let to them at five guineas a year by Mr Thomas Grimshaw of Fulledge. At that time Mr Peregrine Towneley was President, the late Mr Wood, of Burnley Wood, was Treasurer, and Mr Thomas Booth of Crow Nest, acted as Librarian.
