General notes
Hargreaves Street in the 1880s was lined with elegant buildings. At its end stood the magnificent new Co-op stores, with its foundation stone laid by Robert Hughes, best remembered now as the author of "Tom Brown's Schooldays". You could buy almost anything here. The tall building on the right of Hargreaves Street was an earlier Co-op building. The houses next to it were demolished to make way for the Post Office. On the left can be seen part of a sign saying "Bread and Biscuit Maker". Herbert Lomas, an actor who achieved international fame, was born here. He made his name playing the role of Abraham Lincoln and survived the transition to films, going on to appear opposite Bette Davis.
