Mr Edmund Arthur Le Gendre Starkie, Captain 3rd Battalion East Lancashire (Militia) Regiment, was the eldest son of Colonel Le Gendre Nicholas Starkie.

Edmund Starkie (1871 -1958) served as Captain in the Boer War. He and his wife Maud, were prominent local promoters of the Red Cross and St John's Ambulance Brigade, and gave Huntroyde Hall to be used as a hospital for convalescent soldiers during the First World War.
