It is now close to 20 years since the old Burnley steam trams of the old Tramway Company were strapped in favour of the present electric system, and it may be of interest to younger people to see a reproduction of the type of trams in the the town before their day, and to older generations as a reminder and comparison. Our photograph shows the old steam engine drawing the car by a swivel connecting rod, and it is remarkable that the conductor standing by the engine (Mr Davy) is still a conductor on the present system. The system was very good for its day, but the growth of the district necessitated more up to date locomotion and more routes. At the time the only line was the direct one between Padiham and Nelson. There were many amusing incidents in the old days when the steam trams "refused" to mount Westage or the Palace House to Tim Bobbin Hill; or when the engine at points went one way and the car the other. All the same they served their day very well, but a return would be impossible.
