Previous to 1866 a weekly market was held and local politicians met to settle affairs of state. Considered the centre of Burnley and was at one time. By the side of the tram lines was the old mere-stone, formerly the centre of the three quarter mile radius of Old Burnley. The Bull Hotel was formerly the Black Bull and is so named in the Burnley Improvement Act 1854. The present building was erected about 1831, but Burnley Churchwardens Accounts relate to a payment paid in 1760-1 to a Mrs Nutter, Bull Inn.
