General notes
The shop at the corner of Hammerton Street and Cow Lane was the first co-operative shop in Burnley. It opened in 1880 and made a profit of £20 in it's first year. Soon it outgrew these cramped premises and a bigger shop was built further down Hammerton Street, before a further move to even larger Co-Op premises on the opposite side of the street. The old shop was Richard Jones's Pawn Brokers when photograph was taken.
