John Waddington was from 1872 the Head Manager of all the collieries that belonged to the executors of Colonel Hargreaves, taking that position on the death of William Waddington ( possibly his father).
The Hargreaves family owned the coal mining industry in Burnley.
Prior to 1872 it would appear that John Waddington was the manager at the Rowley and Middlefield pits.
One of his sons, Henry Waddington, was later manager at Hapton Valley, Bank Hall and the Padiham pits.
John Waddington, on gaining the position of Head Manager moved to Brown Hill, Bank Parade, Burnley. Information accompanying this image states that this house may have become the Headquarters of the National Coal Board at some point.
