General notes
Died January 27th 1890 aged 73. The eldest son of Mr Joseph Smith Grafton, a Manchester merchant. F.W. Grafton was educated at Rigby, but early in life entered the firm of C.E Potter & Co. Calico Printers. In 1856 he took over Broad Oak Works from the Hargreaves family, and was its head up to the times of his demise, a man esteemed by his workpeople and by all with whom he came into contact. In 1880 he returned to Parliament as the colleague of Lord Hartington for the North-Eastern Division of the county, and won the first election in the Accrington Division after the re-distribution of seats. For many years Mr Grafton was president of the Accrington Liberal Club, and was a munificent supporter of that and other clubs, and also the Mechanics Institution.
