General notes
Built in 1787 Union street was one of the oldest streets in Accrington, and replaced the old road which linked the townships of Old Accrington and New Accrington. On the right of the photograph are some of the original 18th century cottages and the Wesleyan Sunday School, which was built on the site of the old workhouse. Behind the school, a hand loom weaving shop used to stand. The workhouse was used as a barracks during the power-loom riots 1826.
