Courthouses was the name of a group of old homesteads, consisting of a farm and several cottages, which disappeared long ago. Part of the site is now occupied by the Town Hall, built in 1858 as the Peel Institution. Court House Buildings in Union Street were named after the nearby farm. The father of Alderman Swain Rhodes was responsible for the demolition of the old houses, and the erection of the new buildings in 1840. Alderman Swain Rhodes lived here until his death in 1890. Solicitors' offices were situated in the buildings from 1857, originally Thos. Haworth and Co., subsequently Haworth and Broughton, and then Richard Broughton and Co. Mr Richard Broughton acted as Magistrates' Clerk and had his office in the buildings, as did his successor Mr William Maudsley. In 1950, Broughton and Co were taken over by Robert Kidd Whitaker and Pratt, of which Mr G A Pratt, the former Clerk to Accrington Magistrates became head. In 1960 they moved to Cannon Street, ending a long legal connection with the old name. Barclays Bank was built on the site of the old buildings in 1963, and the carved commemorative plaque from the façade of the old offices was incorporated in a recess in the banking hall.
