General notes
On the left of the photograph is the shop (73 Manchester Road) of butcher and pork dealer Edward Johnson who was there in 1883. The premises below in 1883 were occupied by Thomas Hudson (at 69) a boot and show maker; Henry Watson (at 67) a cabinet maker and upholsterer; James Hawkins Rawcliffe (at 65) a grocer and tea dealer; Matthew Watson (at 49) accountants and estate agents; Miss Emily Wildman and Co. (at 47) confectioners and Charles Bailey (at 47) a yarn agent.
The tram lines are visible and we know that they were in use by February 1904. On either side of the junction there are some bollards which served the purpose of preventing horse drawn vehicles from crossing the pavement.
Hammerton Street is named after the Hammerton family who owned some land in Burnley and derived part of their income from rents from one or two small coal mines which once operated in the Hammerton Street area.
