General notes
In 1879 came the proposal for the construction of tramlines and the running of steam trams between Nelson
Burnley and Padiham. Because of the roads and streets it was a single track. the first trial run was in August 1881. the engine , a'Kitson ' broke down in Westgate and was hauled back to Queensgate by horses. Maximum speed was 8 miles per hour from on Church Street where it was 4m.p.h. There were many breakdowns of these steam trams and many complaints of noise, smoke, steam and bad service. After 1900 the corporation bought the steam tramway system for £53,000 and converted it to the Corporation Electric Tramway. - January 4th 1902 was the day the first electric car ran through to Nelson and about this time Church Street was widened and the the Old Gothic House near theGrammer School demolshed. The extension of the tramway to Rosegrove, Manchester Rosd, Harle Syke and Townley was autherised in1908. Eventually, of course the motor omnibus replaced the trams and the trams were completely abandoned on May 8th 1935.
