The photograph is not positively identified as to location.
One opinion is that, as the original photograph has the note "Padiham" on the reverse it maybe the Cornfield Colliery, beside the River Calder, but the headgear construction differs from other photographs of Cornfield , so it maybe Knotts Colliery. Knotts Colliery, on Knotts Lane under the railway arch.

Alternatively it is proposed that it shows Higham Colliery at SD 796354, with Higham Mill chimney in the background to the left of the tree.
