Steam engines at Bank Hall (1867 -1971)
This close up of the Watt-type governor clearly shows its construction and mode of operation.
The governor is driven by twin ropes from the crankshaft and as the engine rotates the two small weights fly outwards under centrifugal force lifting the block to which they are attached. The large central bobbin weight and adjustable cylindrical weight visible behind, both tend to counteract this motion and the vertical cylindrical dashpot in the foreground, acts by levers to smooth out any sudden movements in either direction. As the engine speeds up, the block is raised which acts by levers to pull the valve trip rod, seen linking the governor and trip gear, which advances the point of steam cut-off, thus slowing down the engine.
