The Union Workhouse, or Primrose Bank Institution as it was later known, opened in 1876. This photograph shows the bakehouse and cookhouse, which some of the residents worked in. The workhouse was appropriated by Burnley Corporation in 1933 and remained in use until its closure in 1948. A number of its buildings were then integrated into the hospital complex.
