Gerald Arbuthnot (19.12.1872 - 25.9.1916), entered Conservative politics after a career in the Navy. In 1906 he contested Burnley for the first time, losing to the Liberal Fred Maddison, in a three way poll with the Socialist Hyndman. He remained the Conservative candidate and in January 1910 beat Maddison by 95 votes. However, Arbuthnot quickly lost the seat in December 1910 to the Liberal Philip Morrell. In 1912 Arbuthnot resigned as the candidate, remaining active in national Conservative politics, including being Vice Chancellor of the Primrose League. At the outbreak of war in August 1914 he re-joined the Royal Navy with the rank of Lieutenant commanding mine-sweepers. In 1916 he transferred to the Grenadier Guards in order to see action. He was killed in France on 25.9.16.aged 43 and is buried at Fricourt. In 1894, he married "Dulcie" Oppenheim, daughter of a financier who supported him in his constituency work. She died in 1943.
