Born in Manchester, John Slagg was President of Manchester Chamber of Commerce and a director of Suez Canal Co., Elected in 1880 as one of Manchester's three M.P.s, after the Redistribution of Seats Act., 1885 he stood as Liberal for Manchester North West but lost. On the death of Peter Rylands in 1887 he stood against J.O.S. Thursby and was elected for Burnley, but suffered poor health, resigning in February 1889 and died 7.5.1889 aged 47. The seat then passed to Jabez Balfour who was elected unopposed.
