General notes
The Hustings on the Cattle Market on Monday 15th November 1868. Mr Richard Shaw, the Liberal candidate had been proposed and seconded. General Scarlett is shown making a speech.

In the drawing are (left to right back row)
Joseph Clegg, Joshua Rawlinson, Thomas Turner Wilkinson FRAS, William Robinson, Thomas Nowell, Thomas Dean MB, John Massey (who seconded Mr Shaw), Richard Shaw of Holme Lodge, the Liberal candidate, William Miller Coultate MD, Henry Houlding (afterwards editor of the Burnley Gazette), Francis Hartley (Mr Shaw's agent), John Sharples Veevers of Reedley, A. Buck Creeke (Town Clerk), Edmund Parker (Town Cryer), William Lomas (Mayor), John Chester Farn (editor of the Burnley Gazette), James Heaton (reporter for the Preston herald and Burnley Advertiser), John Heelis JP, Richard Parker, Henry Milnes, James Roberts JP (who seconded General Scarlett's nomination), John Greenwood of Turf Moor House (who proposed the Conservative candidate), Captain Harry Buck Creeke, Robert Handsley (Conservative, sub-agent), James Folds JP, General Sir James Yorke Scarlett KCB, George Slater, George Slater Junior, Reverend Hugh Stamer, Reverend James Butler LLD (Headmaster of the Grammar School).

In front standing by the steps:
Police Superintendent Samuel Alexander, John Sutcliffe (a Tinner)

The drawing from the recollection of W. H. D. Flack (1852-1936), is almost certainly from 'The Trader', a newspaper of the 1920s and 1930s. The artist is almost certainly Francis Lynch (d1932).

The ladies in the drawing are Elizabeth Slater and Miss Halsted of Hood House (in the dark coat). The man in the corner behind them in the tall hat is John Tattersall. The bellman was perhaps Edward Robinson rather than Edmund Parker.
