General notes

The Bethesda church had modest beginnings, with its founders attending services conducted in rooms over nearby shops, until a suitable site for building their own church had been obtained. It was in 1814 that construction was completed on the original church, called the Bethesda Congregational Church, and it was opened for services.

The building was expanded in 1835, but by 1878 it was decided that an even bigger, more ornamental church was required. Therefore, it was completely demolished and a new church was built.
