General notes
Built circa 1740 it was originally a farm house on a site in Thorn Croft, and converted into an inn in about 1770. The two well known thorn trees can be seen in the courtyard. The landlord in about 1890 was George Ogden, famous for winning a swimming race on the canal from Godley Bridge to Manchester Road Bridge in 1878. The Thorn hotel was also the Liberal Election Campaign office in the 19th Century and was demolished in 1965.
