General notes
James and Lorna Stephenson seated among more than 1500 guests on the evening of Thursday February 27 1941 at the Biltmore Bowl at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Off camera, Bette Davis speaks at the annual dinner banquet given by the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. The 13th Academy Awards 1940 is hosted by producer Walter Wanger. President Roosevelt gives a live patriotic six-minute radio address to the Awards Ceremony. If the Stephensons look tense, that's because this is the first Academy Awards in which the names of Oscar winners are kept completely secret of use of sealed envelopes. Though nominated best supporting actor for his role in "The Letter", Stephenson loses to Walter Brennan. The Oscar nomination citation is given to him on that night still survives. It is signed by Academy President Walter Hampden and Secretary Mervyn Le Roy.
