General notes
Padiham's first fire brigade formed in 1859. By 1888 it had been housed in various locations around the town before settling on this site at the old Gas Works. Here some former cottages were converted in to a fire station which included a recreation area for the fifteen men of Padiham Fire Brigade.
Their first fire engine was purchased in the same year. This was replaced eleven years later by the horse drawn, steam powered pump pictured on the left, which was named 'The Brun'. By 1914 it was decided that in order to adequately cope with an increasing workload, a motorised fire engine was required. This came in the form of the Leyland engine pictured on the right. During testing in the July of 1914, local councillor and chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee, Mr W. J. Holgate named it 'The Fire Queen'. The names of the other men in the photograph have been listed in no particular order.
