General notes
Burnley Express 11/03/1933 p.13. Front row, above the wall left to right, 5th from left, Miss Hartley, then of Fence, Mrs HH Robinson, Rev HH Robinson vicar of St Andrews (with walking stick), Miss Dugdale, Mr William Dugdale (of Simonstone Hall), Mr (then) JOS Thursby, Mrs Thursby, Miss McGuire, Mr Abraham Altham, Lady O'Hagan (hand on table) Sir John H Thursby (with top hat), Mr Joshua Rawlinson treasure of the hospital (without hat), Mayor of Burnley (Mr Thomas Thornber), Canon A Townley Parker (wearing biretta), Mr WA Cruickshank.... Those taking part in the ceremony were Lady O'Hagan, Mrs Joshua Rawlinson and Mrs Abraham Altham. Mrs Rawlinson is seated just at her husband's elbow in the photograph and is not very easily distinguishable. The occasion was 24/05/1890, foundation stones of the children's ward, Victoria Hospital.
Burnley Express 24/05/1890 describes the ward (p.5) and p.3 describes the ceremony. there were three memorial stones, according to the account, laid by Lady O'Hagan, Mrs Altham and Mrs Ecroyd. Evidently the idea of a children's ward was Alderman Altham's. W. Waddington and Son designed it.
The farm building in the background may have been part of Lower Primrose Bank farm I think (KG Spencer, February 1983).
The memorial stones of the proposed children's ward were laid by Mrs. Altham, Mrs. Ecroyd and Lady O'Hagan.
