General notes
16 designs were submitted for the proposed Victoria Hospital and in August 1883, Captain Douglas Galton of London, made the decision to accept the designs of the architects Messrs. Willian Waddington and Son of Grimshaw Street. They recommended building according to the Circular Plan and ward design reflected in this image of Butterworth ward. the Circular design was initiated in the 1880's from proposals made by Professor John Marshall, who thought that circular wards would improve light, air and ventilation and make nursing easier.
